Paul Delvaux painted Woman in front of the Sea at an unknown date using oil on canvas. Look at these women, walking calmly along the beach, holding hands, but there is something eerie about the industrial landscape over their shoulders. This is not some naive vision of paradise. There is so much awkwardness in the work and uncertainty in how to see it; it opens up a space of imagination. Did Delvaux imagine the women as a kind of classical Greek chorus? What do you think he thought about while he was painting them? Do you think there was a story to which they belonged or were they, like the mermaids behind them, just visions in the salty air, or a daydream of his? We, as artists, are in an ongoing conversation exchanging ideas. It's about embracing ambiguity and uncertainty, which allows for multiple interpretations of a work.
