Fritz Syberg made this small drawing with pencil on paper. Look at the density of marks; they seem to vibrate and quiver! I can almost feel Syberg’s hand moving quickly across the page, trying to capture the essence of the scene before him. Those urgent lines probably came about through trial, error, and intuition. I can imagine the artist thinking: what am I looking at? What do I want to emphasize? How do I communicate the depth of field? I love how the network of crisscrossing lines creates depth and texture, suggesting the lushness of the landscape. I am intrigued by the ducks clustered in the foreground, seemingly oblivious to our gaze, and the way Syberg frames the composition with foliage, like a proscenium arch. The work reminds me that artists are constantly in dialogue with each other, building upon the ideas and techniques of their predecessors. Painting becomes a site of inquiry and embodied expression, always open to new perspectives.
