Editor: This is Hippolyte Bellangé's "Soldier of the Line," from 1855. It's a monochrome drawing that seems surprisingly active and weighty. What do you make of Bellangé's depiction? Curator: It's interesting, isn't it? Bellangé clearly had a fondness for military subjects, especially the drama of Napoleonic campaigns. It's as if he wants us to feel the soldier's forward momentum, the weight of duty, but also perhaps…the vulnerability. Do you see the slight awkwardness in his pose? Editor: Yes, almost a hesitation, like he's steeling himself. It's more nuanced than I initially thought. Thanks! Curator: My pleasure! It's those little observations that make art so rewarding.
