It’s not simply a snapshot of everyday life, but a carefully constructed message designed to cultivate national pride and even legitimize the existing social order. How do you see the function of “history-painting” impacting how the lower class could view their station at this time? Editor: I see! The details become incredibly important then, don't they? To consider which industries are being shown, and how, becomes crucial to understand how art functions to form identity and history, something easily missed just looking at a painting as just something 'pretty'.
