Curator: Ultimately, as an artist working during the Northern Renaissance period I imagine Schäufelein may have understood more clearly than us that behind any triumph always lingers the very real risk of toppling or disintegration. I have to say, that knowledge changes the image dramatically. Editor: Agreed, understanding this context reframes my entire interpretation. It ceases to be just a visually striking image and becomes a complex reflection on Renaissance society.
