Julie de Graag made this portrait of Ineke Broekman in 1916, and its sepia tones give it an antiquated feeling. There is a beautiful simplicity in the mark making that communicates a softness in the subject, a kind of quiet self-absorption. De Graag's technique is wonderful in how she uses the bare minimum of marks to create texture. It is apparent in the almost wood-like texture of the hair, which has a pleasing and reassuring density. The same lines that create the hair are then mirrored in Ineke's clothing, so that the sitter almost blends into the image. The effect is comforting, like being wrapped in a warm blanket. I am reminded of the graphic work of Emil Nolde, another artist who made compelling portraits with an emphasis on dark lines and bold simplicity. It’s cool how artists can use simple means to express so much.
