Editor: Sofia Bonati's "Westworld For Sky TV," looks like a mixed-media collage combining oil paint and other techniques. It features a portrait of a woman, but there's something unsettling about it. What jumps out at you in this work? Curator: The labyrinth above her head is immediately arresting. It reminds me of ancient symbols of initiation and hidden knowledge. What do you make of the single eye at its center? Editor: That's so interesting, I didn’t immediately see it as a symbol of initiation. I thought maybe it has something to do with surveillance, with the all-seeing eye. Curator: Exactly. And how do you think that might be linked to the figure below, recalling classical portraiture, yet also very contemporary? Perhaps the continuous line background contributes too, creating a mesmerizing optical effect? Editor: I suppose it suggests she’s trapped somehow? Both by external forces but also maybe in her own mind? Is that what you mean about initiation - a journey into one’s self? Curator: Precisely! These visual languages build up layers. The classical portrait evokes tradition, while the collage disrupts it. This fragmentation speaks to modern identity—a self assembled from different pieces. The labyrinth becomes not just a challenge but a construction of the self, seen by this 'all-seeing' single eye, creating tension between freedom and determinism. Editor: That's really helpful. I initially saw it as just a portrait with strange additions, but now I see it as a commentary on identity and control. It gives you a lot to consider. Curator: Indeed. Bonati invites us to consider how much of our perception is pre-determined, and where genuine freedom of thought begins.
