This is the right wing of 'The Donne Triptych' painted by Hans Memling, a German artist active in Flanders, during the fifteenth century. It depicts Saint John the Evangelist. Painted during a time when the idea of gender roles was rigidly defined by social and religious norms, the painting introduces an intriguing narrative. Saint John is portrayed with delicate, almost androgynous features which challenge conventional representations of masculinity. Clothed in a flowing red robe, he holds a chalice, his gaze directed downwards. There’s a sense of introspection, a quiet contemplation, that invites a different kind of engagement. He is an intriguing figure who invites us to consider the nuances of identity, transcending the limitations of traditional gender roles. Looking at Saint John, we are asked to consider a more inclusive vision of sanctity.
