Curatorial notes

Giovanni Volpato made this print of a country house and farm using etching, in the late 18th century. The image presents a vision of rural life that carries complex social and cultural meanings. Made in Italy, it presents a sharp contrast between the wealthy landowners and the working class. The grand villa and the humble farm buildings speak volumes about the social hierarchy of the time. The inscription, “Live tranquilly, the villanel with poco,” suggests a romanticized view of peasant life, one that perhaps ignores the harsh realities of rural poverty. The image encourages us to consider the public role of art, and the politics of imagery. What social conditions are shaping the production, reception and distribution of this artwork? To fully understand an artwork like this, we need to engage in historical research: looking at estate records, social surveys, and other documents to build a rounded picture of the past.
