Wijnand Otto Jan Nieuwenkamp made this small print, "Waves during a storm off the south coast of Bali," using etching. The way he's built up the image through many thin lines really makes me think about how much art is about process. Look closely, and you’ll see how the texture is everything here. The etched lines almost vibrate. The white spaces around the crests feel foamy, explosive. It's easy to get lost in how chaotic the ocean is, but here, Nieuwenkamp gives it structure. I’m drawn to the top left corner. Check out how those lines loop back on themselves, creating these wild, curling shapes that feel both natural and totally invented. In a way, that's what printmaking is all about, isn't it? Reaching back to artists like Hokusai, it reminds us that art isn't just about capturing what you see, but about feeling it, making it, and then sharing it with the world.
