-Reindeer c. 1910 - 1935

This cast iron Reindeer was made by the A.C. Williams Company. The dark head and burnished golden body gives it a striking, regal presence. I’m imagining the hands that worked on it, the careful application of the colors, the burnishing to bring out the metallic sheen. The sculptor has captured a certain stillness, a quiet watchfulness. I can almost feel the weight of the metal, the coolness against my skin, and think about what it might have been like to work in that foundry, shaping something so solid and enduring. The antlers reach up like branches, echoing the natural world, transformed into art. It reminds me that art making is always an exchange, a conversation with the materials, with the subject, with the world itself. I feel how much we bring our own experiences to it. The Reindeer sits there, a testament to that ongoing dialogue, a symbol of enduring creativity and imagination.
