Eugene Brand’s painting, made with thin paint in blue, grey, yellow, and black, feels like he just grabbed whatever was lying around and went to it. I can imagine him playing around with some ideas, maybe starting with the yellow chair on the left, solid and yet also spotty. Then, what is that above the figures? Is it a stage? A shelf? I love how this artwork invites you to play and invent narratives. The black lines defining the figures are so playful and confident, like a child's drawing but with a knowing wink. You can see he has looked at other artists and styles but has also digested these influences, so it becomes uniquely his own. It reminds me of other artists like Dubuffet, who were also inspired by the raw energy and freedom of children's art. It’s a reminder that painting is like a conversation that spans across time. We learn from each other, inspire each other, and keep the dialogue going.
