Johan Daniël Koelman made this watercolor called ‘Vrouw op een paard gezeten met kan’ - or 'Woman on a horse with jug' - in the Netherlands. Although the artwork's date is unknown, we can infer that it was made in the mid-19th century. It depicts a woman sitting casually on a horse, holding a jug. The image creates meaning through its cultural references. In 19th century Netherlands, the image of a woman was commonly associated with domesticity and purity. However, the woman in this painting is on a horse, and barefoot, which may have been seen as unconventional. This could be a subtle critique of the social expectations placed on women during that time. Historians often look at an artist's wider body of work, as well as diaries and letters, to understand their ideas more fully. By understanding the social and institutional context in which art is made, we can appreciate its meaning more deeply.
