This panel, part of the Barbara altar, was painted by Master Francke in the early 15th century. Francke was a German painter, a Dominican friar, whose art reflects the religious and social context of the late Middle Ages. The panel depicts a scene from the legend of Saint Barbara, who was imprisoned in a tower by her father, a pagan, for her Christian faith. Here we see her father about to strike her. Consider the violence depicted, and Saint Barbara’s calm acceptance. The figures are stylized, with elongated bodies and expressive faces, characteristic of Gothic art. Francke’s attention to detail is evident in the rendering of the clothing and the architectural elements. Saint Barbara’s story became a symbol of resistance against patriarchal authority, a figure of female strength. The painting invites us to reflect on the themes of faith, persecution, and the struggle for individual belief in the face of oppression. It asks, how do we respond when our deepest beliefs are challenged?
