Editor: Here we have "The Drinker" by Pierre Alexandre Aveline. It's a rather tall plate engraving. The detail in the figure's clothing is striking. What can you tell me about the materials and its creation? Curator: Looking at this print, I'm drawn to the process of its making and its probable function. This piece was made during Aveline’s tenure as engraver to the King’s Library. Considering this, how does this context shift your understanding of its purpose and who it was made for? Editor: Perhaps it was meant to be viewed as a sign of prestige and luxury. The detail must have taken great skill. Curator: Exactly. The very act of creating such a detailed print was a statement in itself about French artistry and its cultural importance. Did you notice the decorative elements? How do they factor into the piece as a commodity? Editor: Good point. The ornament certainly adds to the sense of luxury. I never considered it from that perspective.
