Johannes Glauber created this Arcadian landscape with a river and three bathing women. This black and white drawing transports us to the imagination of the 17th and 18th centuries. During this period, the artistic and intellectual movement known as the Enlightenment was growing. The legacy of the Enlightenment includes the pursuit of reason, skepticism, and the growth of scientific knowledge. In many ways, this emphasis on reason challenged traditional beliefs and empowered individuals to question established norms and values. The naked women in the water call into question traditional representations of female sexuality, but also how women can relate to their bodies, their environment, and each other, outside of the structures of social control. The artist creates a space for viewers to consider the dynamics between the individual, the natural world, and the broader society in which they live.
