"Maaltijd in Emmaüs" is an engraving made by Pieter de Jode II, who lived in Antwerp during the 17th century, a period marked by religious and political upheaval in the Netherlands. This work depicts the biblical story of Jesus's revelation to his disciples in Emmaus, during a meal. The composition invites us to consider the role of shared meals in forging and revealing identities. Christ, framed by a halo, holds and breaks bread, an action of humble service that becomes a profound act of recognition. Consider how the figures respond. The disciples, rendered with deep lines that highlight their surprised expressions, embody a moment of profound realization. Are they experiencing a challenge to their preconceived notions, or an affirmation of faith? This image is not merely a recounting of a biblical event, but an invitation to reflect on the intersections of faith, community, and the transformative potential found in the simplest of human interactions.
