Eugène Van Hove created this small etching, "Fight Between a Lion and an Ostrich," sometime around the turn of the 20th century. The composition is dominated by a struggle rendered in a tightly packed, monochromatic palette. The drama hinges on the stark contrast between the textures; the rough, dense fur of the lion versus the comparatively smooth, elongated neck of the ostrich. This textural differentiation creates a visual tension that captures the ferocity of the encounter. The horizon line is placed high, compressing the space and intensifying the focus on the immediate life-and-death conflict. The artist uses light and shadow to sculpt the forms, yet the absence of distinct outlines contributes to a sense of primordial chaos. This blending of forms questions traditional distinctions between predator and prey, naturalizing existential anxieties and creating an unsettling, indefinite space.
