Huib van Hove Bz created this watercolor painting titled "Man en vrouw in historisch kostuum" in 1841. Observe the man and woman adorned in what the artist interprets as historical attire. The woman's dress features a prominent trefoil, a symbol deeply rooted in history. It is reminiscent of ancient symbols of divinity and often associated with the Holy Trinity in Christian iconography. Centuries before, similar tri-leafed symbols appeared in various cultures, each imbuing it with unique spiritual and symbolic meanings. Looking at the image, one wonders about the artist’s intent and whether his choice of this symbol reflects a conscious connection to the past or if it stems from the collective unconscious, where archetypal symbols reside. The trefoil speaks to a shared human experience. Indeed, we see how symbols are non-linear; they evolve and are reborn across eras, echoing through time and culture. They engage with the emotional and psychological depths of the viewer, sparking a dialogue between the present and the echoes of human history.
