Curatorial notes
Franz Ertinger created this print, "Dancing and Music-Making Bacchantes," sometime in the 17th century. The print illustrates a scene of bacchanalia, festivals associated with the Roman god of wine, Bacchus, and as such, it gives us a glimpse into the social lives of men at that time. The male figures shown here are engaged in music and revelry, activities often linked to masculine identity. This is a classical scene, but it raises questions about gender and power. The almost satirical portrayal of the bacchantes, some of whom are riding a donkey, might reflect societal attitudes towards indulgence and the disruption of social norms. Ertinger invites us to witness a moment of ecstatic release, but one that's also framed by the artistic and cultural conventions of his time. How does our own culture represent such figures of excess and abandon?
