Fernand Léger made this painting – *Les Fumées dans une architecture métallique* – using bold black lines, some buff-coloured cloud-like blobs, and a soft, washy blue. Imagine Léger layering these elements, shifting forms, maybe starting with the scaffolding-like structure on the left, adding the smoky shapes, and then deciding that a solid vertical rectangle would pull it all together. I wonder if Léger was thinking about industrialization, or maybe just how shapes interact with each other. I love the flatness, how it creates a kind of shallow space. It's like a stage set, or maybe a blueprint that’s gone a bit haywire. The paint looks thin, like watercolor or gouache, which gives it a lightness that contrasts with the heavy black lines. Those lines almost look like a drawing, but they also define the edges of the colored shapes, creating a tension between line and form. You can see echoes of Léger’s earlier cubist works here, but also hints of the machine aesthetic he became known for. Painters are always looking at each other, borrowing and riffing off ideas. And sometimes, the most exciting thing is when they take a risk and try something completely different.
