Curatorial notes
This engraving depicts four hundred citizens of Utrecht begging Count William IV of Holland for peace. Although the artist is anonymous, the scene they captured speaks volumes about power, class, and survival in 1345. On one side, we see Count William IV mounted on horseback, adorned in armor, embodying authority and military might. In stark contrast, the citizens of Utrecht kneel before him, their postures conveying humility and desperation. This visual arrangement immediately highlights the unequal power dynamic between the ruler and the ruled. The engraving invites us to reflect on the human cost of conflict. What does it mean to be at the mercy of someone else's decisions? How does it feel to plead for peace, knowing that your fate rests in the hands of another? The artist captures the emotional weight of this historical moment, inviting us to consider the personal stories embedded within broader narratives of war and politics.
