This small print by Eduard Karsen is made up of many tiny lines, like a very delicate net, and it shows a farmyard with a barn, haystacks, and a few trees. I can imagine him working on the plate, scratching away, probably squinting a little, and wondering if he'd captured the feeling he was after. It's kind of lonely, right? There’s no one around, just this quiet scene, like something remembered rather than seen. And it’s hard to tell what time of year it is, but I'm guessing it's late autumn or early winter. He probably printed it in his studio, just him and the press. I like how the roofline echoes the line of the haystacks, and how the bare tree on the left seems to mirror the one on the right. It makes me think about how artists keep looking at what other artists do, and keep building on it. The history of art is just a big conversation! You can almost feel Karsen listening in.
