Hendrick Goltzius rendered this dynamic chalk drawing, Hercules en Cacus, around 1588. Goltzius, a Dutch printmaker, draughtsman, and painter, lived in a time marked by religious conflict and the rise of humanism. In this piece, we witness the mythological strongman Hercules in a fierce battle with Cacus, a fire-breathing monster. The struggle is palpable; you can almost feel the tension in Hercules’ bulging muscles and hear Cacus’ desperate roars. Hercules, often seen as a symbol of masculine strength and virtue, is here a figure of dominance over the monstrous ‘other’. This representation of Hercules, as a hyper-masculine hero, raises questions about power, and the era’s attitudes towards masculinity. Goltzius masterfully captures this violent clash, inviting us to reflect on the complexities of heroism and the cultural narratives that shape our understanding of strength.
