Curatorial notes

Editor: Here we have Mary Brewster Hazelton's portrait of John Warren, after Rembrandt Peale. It feels quite somber, almost severe, with that stark contrast. What do you make of it? Curator: It whispers of ambition, doesn't it? I see a life dedicated to public service, rendered with an almost theatrical chiaroscuro. Hazelton, though copying Peale, subtly imbues it with her own quiet intensity. Do you sense a touch of wistfulness too? Editor: I think so. It's more muted than I expected. I’m glad to notice such interesting emotions. Curator: Yes, there's a vulnerability here. Perhaps Hazelton wanted to show more than just John Warren's prominent role. Editor: I’m happy I can see it, too! Thank you.
