This delicate cup was crafted by the Meissen Manufactory. The scene emblazoned upon it offers a glimpse into the soul of a harbor town. The tower, standing sentinel over the harbor, immediately evokes a sense of guidance and protection. In ancient times, towers served as watchtowers, guarding against invaders. But they also appear in religious contexts, such as the Tower of Babel, symbolizing humanity's ambition and quest for the divine. Over time, the tower has been passed down through history, its shape altered, but its core meaning remains. One also finds towers in the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, such as the 'Chasseur in the Forest', where they evoke emotions of longing, spirituality, and introspection. Like this tower, his are romantic symbols. These motifs engage our collective memory, stirring up deep, subconscious feelings.
