This double duit coin, issued in 1790, bears the mark of both the Dutch East India Company, VOC, and the city of Utrecht. The circular form of the coin itself is primary. On one side, a complex heraldic design unfolds with a crowned shield flanked by rampant lions. The other side bears the VOC monogram prominently above the year of its minting. The coin's value as a symbol resides in its materiality and form. Each side is stamped with emblems of power and commerce and the coin's circular format gives it the potential to be flipped. Consider how the tactile nature of this coin creates meaning. As a trade object, it circulated widely in the late 18th century. Today, this coin serves as a signifier of Utrecht's prosperity during a period of global trade and transformation. The coin has become a medium through which power and exchange are communicated.
