Curatorial notes
Paulus Lauters created this landscape with tower using etching. The image invites us into a scene reminiscent of the Romantic era, where nature is not just scenery but a mirror reflecting human emotions and spiritual yearnings. The lone tower in the distance becomes a focal point that evokes the sublime, a symbol of history and perhaps even solitude. Lauters, working in a time of significant social change in Europe, positions us to consider our relationship with the past and nature. What do we make of our own place within these continuities? How do we perceive the tower? A reminder of a storied past, or an omen? These are the personal dialogues the work encourages us to ponder.
