Curatorial notes

Etienne Bosch created this artwork titled ‘Venetië’ as an etching, during a period of significant cultural exchange and artistic exploration. Bosch was born in the Netherlands, where he lived during a time when Europe was reckoning with its colonial past and the rise of industrialization. ‘Venetië’ captures the unique environment of Venice, a city marked by its complex economic structures, from the wealthy merchants to the working class gondoliers, which are both subtly referenced in this print. The architectural backdrop reminds us of Venice’s place as a historical nexus for trade and cultural exchange, while also subtly suggesting the power dynamics inherent in such global interactions. Bosch’s etching technique adds a layer of emotional depth, evoking a sense of nostalgia. Through his artistic choices, Bosch invites us to reflect on our own places within society.
