Pierre-Auguste Renoir's 'Maternity', housed at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, is a bronze sculpture, approximately 22 inches in height. Notice how the dark bronze material and rough, textured surface capture the intimate and tender scene of a mother nursing her child. Renoir employs a formal, almost classical composition. The mother, seated and solid, forms a stable, pyramidal shape, conveying a sense of grounded permanence. The figures are interwoven, their forms blending, obscuring the clear distinctions between mother and child. The sculpture's visual rhetoric echoes the themes explored by structuralist thinkers of the time, highlighting the underlying structures that shape human experience. By blurring the individual forms, Renoir suggests a deeper connection between mother and child. This connection is not just biological, but also symbolic, representing a fundamental aspect of human life and society. The sculpture's textured surface catches and reflects light, adding dynamism to this intimate portrayal of maternity. It challenges fixed notions, inviting ongoing interpretation and reflection.

In this work Ronoir depicts his wife nursing their first-born son, Pierre. It was done after a painting of the same theme, and the bronze was cast, under Renoir's supervision, by a young sculptor named Guino, who worked with the old master.
