Jean Théodore Joseph Linnig created this landscape with waterfall as an etching. Linnig, born in Belgium, came from a family of artists who specialized in maritime scenes. Here, the artist invites us into a complex vision of nature. During the 19th century, landscape paintings were changing from being backdrops for historical or mythological scenes to artworks where nature was the main subject. The relationship to nature was changing too, becoming a place where people could find beauty, solitude and spirituality. With its dramatic rocks, trees, and the quaint buildings in the distance, the scene creates an emotional experience that is both intimate and expansive. The dark, etched lines capture the beauty and awe of the natural world. Linnig asks us to consider our place within it. How do we balance our personal sense of belonging with the vastness of the world?
