Gustave Eugène Chauffourier captured this photograph of the Palazzo Farnese courtyard in Rome. The sepia tones and the play of light and shadow create a study in architectural form and depth. The composition is structured around the geometric repetition of arches and windows. Horizontals define each level of the courtyard, while the verticals of the columns and window frames create rhythm. This structured arrangement is reminiscent of Renaissance ideals of order and proportion. Yet, Chauffourier's photograph also suggests a tension between the solid architectural forms and the intangible qualities of light and space. The photo uses the building as a symbol, but moves toward an exploration of pure form. Chauffourier captures a specific architectural space and moves beyond the straightforward representation toward a kind of architectural abstraction, opening a dialogue between representation and abstraction, and inviting us to reconsider the boundaries between the two.
