"Kruisoprichting", or "Raising of the Cross," is a 16th-17th century engraving by Christoffel van Sichem II. The composition divides into two distinct zones: the frenzied activity on the ground and the serene sky above. The lower section seethes with the angular forms of laborers struggling to erect the cross, their straining bodies rendered with sharp, insistent lines. The cross, the focal point, ascends diagonally, bisecting the scene. Sichem employs a dense network of cross-hatching to create depth and shadow, heightening the drama of the moment. In contrast, the upper zone features stylized celestial bodies, imbuing the scene with symbolic weight. Sichem utilizes the formal structure of the engraving—its lines, composition, and chiaroscuro—to engage with the theological implications of the crucifixion. The contrast between earthly chaos and divine calm underscores the profound spiritual paradox at the heart of the event. The work functions as a site where formal artistic choices amplify cultural and religious narratives, inviting ongoing contemplation."
