Editor: Here we have Jan Bulthuis’ “De Diaconie school te Rotterdam,” created around 1790. It's an engraving – so a print – depicting a cityscape. There's a delicate, almost dreamlike quality to the scene, rendered in subtle grey tones. What do you see in it? Curator: Immediately, the balanced composition is striking. Note the interplay of horizontal and vertical lines; the buildings anchored on either side framing the tranquil water, reflecting an architectural sensibility typical of neoclassicism. Do you observe the structural rigor? Editor: I do now. It’s interesting how the rigid architecture contrasts with the more organic forms of the trees and the figures in the boats. How does that contrast play into its meaning, formally? Curator: The contrast elevates the sense of rationality imposed upon nature, and even human endeavor within this pictorial plane. It draws one's eye through carefully structured layers; near to far; urban to the possibility of expansion. Observe also how Bulthuis manipulates light and shadow to accentuate depth. Editor: Yes, the shading gives a real sense of perspective, pushing the windmill into the background. The artist also repeats a certain set of geometrical shapes throughout. Did the process of engraving allow Bulthuis to capture such details? Curator: Precisely. Engraving demands a precision allowing fine details within each defined area of the image. Do you see any instances of perspective and dimension being enhanced in any particular place in the work? Editor: It does—look how the parallel lines converge to create that depth! I learned to appreciate how seemingly simple compositions can be deeply considered structures. Curator: Indeed. We've explored the art as a designed object as much as a window onto Dutch history, and these components invite viewers into a visual exploration.
