This is Johann Michael Kirschbaum’s ‘New Picture and Sample Book,’ made in 1771. Kirschbaum, a master weaver from Heilbronn, created this book during a time of significant social and economic change in Europe. As industrialization began to take hold, traditional crafts like weaving faced new pressures. These sample books were more than just collections of patterns; they were vital resources for weavers navigating the changing market. The book also speaks to the intersection of art, craft, and commerce. For artisans, their identities were deeply intertwined with their craft, their skills being a source of pride, economic stability, and cultural heritage. This book then, becomes a personal and professional statement, preserving craft and tradition, while also adapting to new economic realities.
