Corneille made *Dans l'infinie verticalite de l'herbe la femme* with a bold approach to colour. He's not afraid of a hot red and a cool green hanging out right next to each other, are they? Look at the texture in this piece, those vertical lines in the red, the 'infinie verticalite' of the title must refer to that. You can almost feel the scratch of the tool that made them, a rough energy that contrasts with the softer shapes of the figure. The woman in the grass seems both at rest and a little uneasy, like she's part of the landscape but also separate from it. The eye, in particular, is a beautiful moment of detail, a small, intense focal point. This reminds me a little of Joan Miró, that same playful spirit and use of simple forms, but Corneille brings his own distinct vision. It’s a reminder that art is never created in a vacuum, but in conversation with the artists of the past and present.
