This is a lithograph from the late 19th century depicting four images of sunspots, made by M. Mascari at the Catania Observatory in Italy. The image gives us a glimpse into the evolving institutional and cultural contexts that shaped the production of scientific knowledge. This particular image was included in a journal called Revue de la Société d'Astronomie, a publication that helped connect the work of individual observatories to a wider community of scientists and interested laypeople. During this period, observatories were receiving increased public funding, and were interested in popularizing science and communicating the importance of their work. These images were therefore more than just records of observation, they were documents that had to be aesthetically pleasing and serve the journal's public role as well. To understand this image more fully, we might consult archives of scientific journals and institutional records, as well as correspondence and other publications by figures connected with the Catania Observatory.
