This photograph of E. Jonckheer was taken by Particam, though we don’t know exactly when. What I love is its study in monochrome. The way the shades subtly shift across the frame. It’s like the whole image is painted in shades of grey. I can imagine Particam, composing the shot, thinking about the ways light will fall on the sitter's suit. About how the fabric will absorb and reflect the light in different ways. I’m curious to know what Jonckheer was like. He looks like a serious guy, his expression is thoughtful, and his suit is very formal. I wonder if he felt comfortable being photographed or if he was a willing participant in Particam's creative process. Photography, like painting, is about capturing a moment, a feeling, an idea. It’s a record and an interpretation. Artists look to each other all the time and learn new ways to express themselves, opening new ways to experience the world.
