Editor: Here we have Max Weber's "Three Figures, Wrestlers." It's hard to put a date on it, but the graphic quality makes me think of early 20th century Expressionism. The figures are so dynamic. What do you see in the composition, formally speaking? Curator: The composition employs stark contrasts in value, creating a sense of tension and drama. Note the interplay between the dense, dark areas and the relatively untouched paper; this pushes the figures forward. Editor: So the abstraction serves a purpose, heightening the emotional impact through the visual push and pull? Curator: Precisely. The absence of detail allows for a focus on the essential forms and their dynamic relationship within the picture plane. The semiotic is one of tension and release. Editor: Fascinating. I'll definitely look at Weber differently now.
