Robert Frank created this contact sheet, titled "From the bus 65." You know, contact sheets like this give you such an insight into a photographer’s process. It's like looking at a painter's preparatory sketches. You see all these frames, the world as a series of glances. I can imagine Frank on that bus, his eye darting around, capturing glimpses of city life. Look at the way he frames those storefronts, the people waiting, the reflections in the windows. There’s a kind of raw, restless energy to it, a sense of capturing fleeting moments. It reminds me a bit of when I am making a painting and deciding what marks to keep and what to discard, allowing for accidents and happenstance. It’s like he's saying, "Here, look at this world, it’s messy, contradictory, and beautiful all at once." And that, for me, is what makes Frank's work so powerful. He sees the poetry in the everyday, and in the art of photography. He has a keen eye, that reminds us how important it is to make something out of very little.
