Asger Jorn, a Danish artist, made ‘Vizio geologico’ using oil on canvas. Jorn was interested in challenging the conventions of art institutions, and he co-founded the avant-garde movement called COBRA that sought to break free from the traditional norms of painting. With its bold brushstrokes, the picture refuses to give us any clear shapes. It seems that the artist wanted to create a sense of chaos, which was closely linked to the post-war cultural and political atmosphere in Europe. Jorn and his colleagues were trying to create a new kind of art that would be more in tune with the social, economic, and political upheavals of the time. By looking at the history of the COBRA movement and considering the cultural environment in which Jorn was working, we can better understand this artwork. It is a reminder that art is not made in a vacuum. It is influenced by social conditions of its time.
