Adriaen Honich created this landscape with large boulders in water using pen and brush with grey wash. Honich’s work is interesting for the way he renders the natural scene before us, especially his use of grey wash that he applied with a brush. Look at the ways in which he builds up layers of shading to create a sense of depth and volume, and the ways in which he captures the texture of the rocks and foliage, achieving a balance between realism and expressiveness. This highly skilled practice reflects a broader cultural interest in the natural world, and the techniques employed here carry their own history, separate from art and design. Honich demonstrates how these materials, simple as they may seem, can be manipulated to create a compelling visual experience.
