This “Fragment (Border)” was woven by the Nazca people, though the precise date of its creation remains unknown. The textile immediately strikes us with its tactile, almost overwhelming texture. A dense field of dark fringe dominates, contrasting with the fragmented, brightly colored woven sections beneath. The composition, or perhaps decomposition, invites us to consider the interplay between surface and depth, order and chaos. The fringe functions as a kind of veil, obscuring and revealing the intricate patterns underneath. Semiotically, the textile’s structure may also reflect the Nazca’s complex worldview, where symbolic forms and patterns are integral to social structures and ritual practices. The fragment destabilizes any fixed reading; it presents itself as a dynamic interplay of visibility and concealment.
