Robert Frank made "Three Penny Opera IV," a photographic print on paper, sometime in the last century. What grabs me first is its grittiness, and how the artist isn't afraid to show the process. The image is raw; the film grain is right there, like exposed nerves. It’s about the texture of seeing, not just the content. The monochromatic palette feels like a memory, distant and a little sad, punctuated by flashes of bright light. Look at the bottom row of frames. It looks like a stage set, bare and minimal. To me, that’s the heart of this piece. The way Frank uses light and shadow, it's almost like he is painting with it. It's like a conversation with someone like Moholy-Nagy, who also played with photography's potential for abstraction. Ultimately, Frank reminds us that art is as much about feeling as it is about seeing.
