Mary Nimmo Moran created "The Haunt of the Muskrat" using etching, a printmaking technique that was popular during the late 19th century. Moran, one of the few women in the male dominated world of printmaking, embraced the aesthetic of the American landscape. During this time, the United States was undergoing rapid industrialization and westward expansion, and anxieties about the destruction of the natural world became a common theme in art. Moran’s work, however, does not include an overt environmental message. Instead, she drew attention to the small, intimate corners of the landscape and the creatures that lived there. "The Haunt of the Muskrat" invites us to consider our relationship with the natural world on a more personal level. It is through quiet contemplation and observation that we can come to appreciate the beauty and fragility of our environment.
