Frank Stella made "Flin Flon IV" and it’s a geometric composition of intersecting curves within a square format. I imagine Stella in his studio, carefully masking and layering these flat planes of color, probably in acrylic, because it's so precise, so clean. I feel a connection to the way Stella approached painting as a kind of construction or even architectural design. The cool greens, grays, and blues play against the warmer oranges and browns, creating a dynamic visual rhythm. Notice how each curve is outlined in a thin white stripe, it really makes the colors pop. I wonder if, like me, he found liberation in the constraints of geometry. Stella created a complex, optical experience through simple forms and colors. His work reminds us that the act of painting is an ongoing conversation. It's about how we see and interpret the world around us, and how we translate that into something new.
