Vilhelm Lundstrom made this "Komposition", here at the SMK, using simple materials. Look at how the colors create a dialogue. It's all about shapes bumping up against each other, figuring out their place on the canvas. Notice that blue rectangle at the top, it doesn't sit flat, but has a kind of shimmering energy. The yellow almost looks like a deconstructed frame, not holding anything in, but more like a stage for the other shapes. I love how Lundstrom lets the materials do their thing. The textures, the slight imperfections – they're all part of the story. It reminds me of painters like Stuart Davis, who also found ways to turn everyday shapes into something new. It's this ongoing conversation, a remix of ideas that keeps art alive. Ultimately, the beauty of art is its capacity to hold many meanings at once.
