Joan Miró conjured up La Folle au piment rageur using lithography. Just imagine him, hovering over the stone, teasing out these madcap forms. This woman with a raging pepper feels like a cousin to his Constellations series. I wonder if he ever felt trapped by his own visual language? Did he ever just want to paint a regular still life? Maybe this wild woman IS his still life! The star shapes—so Miró—scatter across the surface, anchoring her in a cosmos of his own making. That single yellow eye, peering out, seems to dare us to laugh. It's like he's saying, "Yeah, I know it's absurd, but isn't it also kind of great?" He's in conversation with Matisse and Picasso, but talking in his own language. What a guy.
