Gregg Renfrow’s *Frozen Sky* presents us with a compelling study in verticality and light, achieved through fluid washes of color. The composition is dominated by these vertical bands, which pull the eye upwards, evoking a sense of ethereal spaciousness. The subtle gradations of color, transitioning from muted purples and blues at the top to an almost blinding white below, create a dynamic interplay between depth and surface. This careful manipulation of color and light not only defines the visual space but also invites a phenomenological experience, reminiscent of Barnett Newman's color field paintings. The barely-there, wavering lines disrupt the rigid structure, introducing an element of the organic, as if to suggest a landscape, or a horizon. This tension between the abstract and the representational is central to Renfrow’s project. It destabilizes the very notion of fixed meaning, inviting us to consider the liminal spaces between perception and interpretation. Ultimately, *Frozen Sky* functions as a site where the formal properties of color and line intersect with our perceptual and emotional experiences. It is a reminder that art is not a static object, but an ongoing process of discovery.
