Lars Møller created this watercolor of the Icefjord of Disko Bay in North Greenland sometime in the late 19th or early 20th century. Møller, born in Greenland to a Danish father and Greenlandic mother, occupied a unique position, navigating both colonial and indigenous worlds. Here, Møller’s representation of the landscape intertwines with figures of Inuit hunters, who are central to this narrative. The figures aren't merely placed within the landscape, but are actively engaging with it. One figure points outward, while another prepares to strike. These aren't passive observations, but an active assertion of presence and knowledge. The work subtly challenges the traditional European depictions of Greenland as an exotic, uninhabited land. The image resonates with a sense of lived experience, highlighting the intersection of culture, environment, and survival. It invites us to consider Greenland’s complex history and the experience of those who call it home.
